Energy conservation Flashcards
3 types of energy transport conservation
-Bulk transport , less transport vehicles needed
-Vehicle design , Reduced mass can be done by using steel alloys containing carbon and titanium allow stronger steel so lighter body panels can be used and this reduces fuel consumption
-Fuel combustion efficiency , less wasted fuel , this can be done through better engine temperature control and thermostatically operated fan which is only activated when the engine is over optimum temperature
1 transport and management system
-Integrated transport systems , having different forms of transport along journey to be most efficient , bicycle storage places on trains
5 types of building energy conservation
-Building design , low surface area: volume ratio will lose heat less easily
-choice of materials , High thermal mass materials such as concrete , less temperature extremes , so less cost on air conditioning and heating
-Insulation , double glazed windows where gap should be as large as possible , but not too large that convection currents start , this optimum gap reduces energy losses
-Human behaviour , turning lights off when they are not needed
-home equipment for example low energy appliances , such as newer dishwashers requiring less water and therefore less heating and occupancy sensors so energy is not used when it is unnecessary
3 industrial energy conservation
-Integrated manufacture , such as waste heat energy from manufacturing being used in fish farms or domestic heating
-recycling , Reduced energy use as producing new products from used materials uses less energy than making them fresh from raw materials , this can be difficult though due to public co-operation , price of transport and labour and some things being too difficult to recycle such as batteries
-Mass reduction reduces energy use in its manufacture and transport for example modern milk bottles weigh half as much as early designs
2 Electricity infrastructure management
-Peak shaving/ pumped HEP
-High voltage grid , so current is reduced to minimise energy loss while maintaining power output
