Energy and States of Matter Vocabulary Flashcards
Temperature
Measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object.
Kinetic Energy
Object is the energy that it possesses due to its motion
Thermal Energy
Energy that is generated and measured by heat
Heat
A form of energy that comes from kinetic energy due to the motion of the particles in an object.
Melting
A solid becoming a liquid as a result of the action of heat
Boiling
The action of bringing a liquid to the temperature at which it bubbles and turns to vapor.
Evaporation
The process by which a liquid turns into a gas
Condensation
The process through which the physical state of matter changes from the gaseous phase into the liquid phase.
Freezing
The temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid at normal atmospheric pressure
Solidifying
The process of transformation of a liquid to a solid.
Sublimation
The conversion between the solid and the gaseous phases of matter
Deposition
The geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to a land form or landmass
