the ability of something to do work
conservation of energy
The idea that energy cannot be created or destroyed. The energy that goes into a process must be the same as the energy that comes out.
energy efficiency
The percentage of the total input energy that is used usefully.
kinetic energy
the energy associated with movement
energy transfer
When energy is converted from one type to another.
Vacuum
A completely empty space where there is no air, no atoms - nothing at all.
Vibration
When an object moves backwards and forwards in a repeated fashion. Usually very quickly.
Pitch
how high or low a sound is
amplitude
The ‘size’ of a wave. In a sound wave it tells you how loud the wave will be.
frequency
The number of waves passing a point per second.
reflection
The process when a wave bounces off a surface.
echo
The process when you shout at a wall and hear the sound coming back to you.
chemical energy
energy that is stored within bonds of molecules
gravitational potential energy
Energy that is stored in an object when it is lifted higher up.
nuclear energy
Energy that is released when the nucleus of an atom breaks down.
