Energy and Metabolism Flashcards
What are the two ways of expressing energy?
Energy can be expressed in calories or joules, but the most common way is calories.
What is a single calorie?
A single calorie is the amount of energy required to increase the temperature of water by 1°.
What else can a calorie be referred to as?
A calorie can be referred to as a kilocalorie because 1000 cal is equivalent to 1 kcal.
What does metabolism describe?
Metabolism describes the rate of which the body burns energy.
What does the term basal metabolic rate mean?
The basal metabolic rate is in calories to the body burns in a sleeping state to fulfil all essential biological processes. (BMR)
What is better to use instead of the basal metabolic rate and why?
The basil metabolic rate is not taken into account the increased amount of energy to remain awake therefore the resting metabolic rate is a more accurate method of estimating a persons energy needs
What is resting metabolic rate defined as?
The resting metabolic rate is defined as the amount of energy to require to fulfil all biological processes in a state of conscious rest. (RMR)
What happens to basal metabolic rate and resting metabolic rate as people age?
It declined with age because the amount of lean tissue reduces especially in the skeletal muscle.
What can influence the metabolism of a person?
Influenced by age & gender and body composition.
Why does gender affect the metabolism?
Males tend to have more muscle tissue and therefore have a higher energy requirement then females.
What are the estimated calorie needs per day by age gender and physical activity?
