energy and matter exchange Flashcards
open system
allows energy and matter to enter and exit the system
closed system
allow only energy (not matter) to enter and exit the system (earth is an example of a closed system)
lithosphere
the land part of the biosphere
hydrosphere
the water part of the biosphere
atmosphere
the air part of the biosphere
producers
organisms that use the suns energy to perform photosynthesis and produce their own food
consumers
organisms that cannot make their own food but consume other organisms to obtain energy (you know the three types)
the sun
is the main source of energy for most producers
albedo
the amount of light reflected back to space. if something has high albedo more reflection, low albedo less reflection (clouds)
greenhouse gases
gases in the atmosphere like water vapour and CO2
oceans and land (energy absorption)
most of the energy coming from the sun is absorbed by earths surface
how much sun energy actually reaches the earth?
1-2%
chemosynthesis
the process for deep sea creatures to receive energy since the sun can’t reach down that deep.
bacteria inside tubeworms are able to absorb energy stored in the bonds of hydrogen sulfide coming from deep sea vents
trophic levels
describe feeding relationships in the ecosystem that allow the passing of energy
producers
also called autotrophs and are typically photosynthetic organisms that use light to create sugars (plants)
