Energy And Heat Flashcards
What is Energy?
Energy is the capacity and ability to do work. Energy is needed to make things happen.
What are the different forms of Potential Energy?
- Chemical .P. E.
- Gravitational .P. E.
- Elastic .P. E.
- Magnetic .P. E.
What are TWO examples of energy in everyday lives?
Any answer that makes sense.
Why are fossil fuels bad to use?
- Non-renewable
- Finite amount and once it has been used, they are gone forever.
- When fossil fuels are burned, they release carbon dioxide in the air. The carbon dioxide then traps heat in our atmosphere creating global warming and they take a very long time to make.
Why do we use renewable sources?
- Renewable
- Endless supply
- Infinite
4.. We use renewable sources because they don’t produce carbon dioxide gas from fossil fuels and they reduce air pollution.
A spoon of water that is 80 degrees Celsius, and a cup of water that is the same temp as the spoon of water. Explain the differences and similarities?
Similarity I can think of:
1. They particles in both water has the same average speed of particles which makes them have the same temperature
Differences I can think of:
1. Different amount of the fluid
2. The cup has more energy stored which can last similar temperature longer than the spoon
What is Convection?
The Movement is when hotter particles in a fluid rise up and colder particles in the fluid to sink down. This results in transfer of heat.
What is Conduction ?
Conduction is a process when there is a difference in temperature or electrical potential between adjoining areas, heat or electricity can be transported directly through a substance’s material without the material moving.
What is Radiation?
Radiation is the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through a material medium or space.
What is the Law of Energy?
Energy must come from somewhere, it is never created out of nothing. Energy may change form but the amount of energy stays constant. Energy can never be destroyed but it can change from one form to another.
What is transferred energy? Example.
Transferred energy is when energy can be transferred from one form to another.
E.g. if you touch a hot object, thermal energy will then transfer into your fingers.
What is Energy Transformation? Example.
Energy transformation is when energy is changed from one types into another or many different types.
E.g. 1. a light bulb will transform electrical energy into light and infrared energy.
2. A bungy jumper transforms gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy. The kinetic energy is then transformed into elastic energy when the rubber rope slows the fall.
What is an Energy Chain? Example.
An energy chain is when energy transfers and transforms occurs one after the other.
E.g. energy in a torch:
Batteries convert chemical potential energy into electrical energy. The light bulb changes the electrical energy into light energy and heat energy. This energy chain can be written as:
Chemical potential energy ———-> electrical energy ———> light energy + heat energy.
Give an energy equation for the following situations:
1. Light bulb-
2. An animal running on the ground-
3. A plant leaf in the sunshine-
- Electrical energy ——> light energy + heat energy
- Chemical potential energy ——> kinetic energy + heat energy
- Radiant energy ——-> chemical potential energy ——> Kinetic energy when the plant grows
What is a Renewable energy source? FOUR examples.
Renewable energy source is when you can use that energy over and over again.
E.g. 1. Solar energy- solar energy comes from the sun in the form of electromagnetic waves.
2. Wind energy- air movement (wind) is the result of unequal heating of the sun’s surface . Wind turbines turn in the wind and generate electricity.
3. Hydroelectric energy-
4. Geothermal energy-
