Energy And Food Study Flashcards
How do plants get food?
Photosynthesis
How do animals get energy?
From eating other organisms.
Whats a herbivore?
An animal that eats only plants.
Whats a carnivore?
An animal that eats only other animals or products that other animals make.
What is an omnivore?
An animal that eats both plants and animals.
What are trophic levels?
Sorting animals according to where they are in the food chain and how they obtain energy.
What services do plants provide?
.Food
.Oxygen
.Medicine
What is photosynthesis?
Plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make glucose, (a sugar) and produce oxygen.
How does photosynthesis work?
plants absorb water from roots. Carbon dioxide is absorbed from the stomata. Sunlight is absorbed from chlorophyll.
How do plants take in nutrients?
From minerals and nutrients in the soil. They absorb the nutrients from plants directly or indirectly.
How do animals use energy from food?
.Grow
.Preform daily tasks
.Heal
.Reproduce
What is the difference between an endotherm or an ectotherm?
An endotherm uses its body heat to stay warm and an ectotherm uses the sun or the environment to stay warm.
What is metabolism?
The chemical process animals use to break down or build molecules.
How is metabolism affected by size?
Small active endotherms have faster metabolism than slower larger organisms.
What are examples of internal and external uses of energy?
Internal. External
