Energy And Efficiency Flashcards
What are the nine types of energy?
- Electrical
- Light
- Sound
- Kinetic
- Nuclear
- Thermal
- Gravitational Potential
- Chemical
What is electrical energy?
Energy from the flow of a current.
What are two sources of light energy?
The Sun and lightbulbs.
What can sound energy be attained from?
Anything that makes a noise.
What can kinetic energy be attained from?
Anything that moves
How is nuclear energy attained?
From nuclear reactions.
What is thermal energy?
Energy that flows from hot objects to cooler objects.
What objects have gravitational potential energy?
Anything that can fall.
Name two objects that have elastic potential energy.
Spring and elastic bands.
Name three sources of chemical energy.
Food, fuels and batteries.
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy is never created or destroyed, only transferred.
What type of energy goes into/ comes out of a TV?
In: Electrical
Out: Light, Sound, Heat (as waste)
What makes a device useful?
The ability to transfer one type of energy to another.
What is waste energy?
Any energy that is unhelpful to the task of the device. This is most commonly heat or sound energy.
What is the equation for the efficiency of a device?
Total Energy In
What is the only type of device not to give out her as a waste product?
A heater
What is the job of a heat exchanger?
To reduce the amount of heat energy that is lost from a device.
How does a get exchanger work?
It pumps a cool fluid through the escaping heat. The fluid gains heat energy which is then converted into a form of useful energy.
What is the idea behind a sankey diagram?
To see at a glance how much of the total energy being put into a device is being wasted. The thicker the down arrow, the more the energy wasted.
