Energy And Ecosystems Flashcards
What is the ultimate source of sunlight?
Sunlight
What is an ecosystem
Any group of living organisms and non living things occurring together and the relationships between them, can be thought of as an ecosystem.
Can be large or small scale
What makes up an ecosystem?
Habitat- place where an organism lives
Population-all the organisms of one species who live in the same place at the same time and can breed together
Community- all the populations of different species who live in the same place at the same time and interact
What is a trophic level
The level at which an organism feeds
What is an autotroph
Producers
Where do photoautotrophs obtain their energy from
Light
Where do ch*oautotrophs obtain their energy from
The oxidation of inorganic chemical compounds
What is a heterotroph
Consumer
Carnivores
Obtain energy from organic matter gained from other organisms
How is energy lost at each trophic level in the food chain
As heat (respiration) Some remains stored in dead organisms and waste material, which is then only available to decomposers
What is a producer
Photosynthetic organism that manufacture organic substances using light, energy, water, carbon dioxide and mineral ions
What is a consumer
Get energy by feeding on other organisms
What is a saprobiont
Decomposers
Break down complex materials and dead organisms to simple ones
Release valuable minerals and elements that can be absorbed by plants
