Energy Flashcards
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of a moving object.
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy something gains whens you lift it up, and which it loses when it falls.
What is Elastic potential energy?
The energy stored when something is compressed or pulled.
What is electrostatic energy?
The energy due to the force of attraction or repulsion between two charges.
What is magnetic energy?
The energy due to the force of attraction or repulsion between two charges.
What is chemical energy?
The energy contained in a chemical substance.
What is nuclear energy?
The energy contained within the nucleus of an atom.
What is thermal energy?
The energy something has due to its temperature or state.
What are the four ways energy can be transferred?
- Mechanically
- Electrically
- Heating
- Radiation
What is mechanical transfer?
When a force acts on a body, energy can be transferred between two stores.
What is electrical transfer?
Electricity can transfer energy from a power source.
What is heating transfer?
Thermal energy can be transferred from place to place by the process of conduction, convection and thermal radiation.
What is radiation transfer?
Light and sound carry energy so it can be transferred between places.
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed (it can only be transferred from one store to another).
What is a system?
An object or a group of objects.
What is a closed system?
A region or a group of objects from which nothing can escape.
What is the formula for kinetic energy?
kinetic energy = ½ × mass × speed2
KE = ½ × m × v2
What is the formula for gravitational potential energy?
gravitational potential energy = mass × gravitational field strength × height
GPE = m × g × h
What is the formula for elastic potential energy?
energy = 0.5 × spring constant × extension2 E = ½kx2
What is specific heat capacity?
the amount of thermal energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of that substance by 1 °C.
