Q

What is a food chain

A

A food chain is how energy moves through all living habitats and ecosystems

The chain begins with the sun and ends with animals

Q

What are renewable energy sources

A

Sources of energy that are unlimited or can be replaced

If it can be recreated in about 100 years

Examples wind, solar, water

Also called clean or green energy because it doesn’t pollute

Q

What are non renewable sources of energy?

A

Can’t be replaced in a relatively short time. Most of our energy comes form fossil fuels (natural gas, crude oil)

Q

Give examples of renewable energy

A

Wind
Wind farms …The wind spins the turbines to create electricity

Water
Can be used to generate electricity …this is called hydropower

Solar
Converts sunlight into electricity

Q

Give examples of non renewable energy sources

A

Oil
Pumped out of the ground. Used in vehicles or for heating

Gas
Extracted from the ground…Used for cooking and heating or converted to electricity

Coal and uranium
Both are mined from the earth. Coal is burned to generate electricity
Uraniumis used to power nuclear generators

16
Q

Electrical energy

A

Caused by movement of electrons. Electric energy is in batteries and outlets in our homes. Examples would be TVs and video games

17
Q

What is light energy

A

The only form of energy we can see. It is formed via chemical, radiation or mechanical means. Light energy can also be covered into other forms of energy. Examples are visible light, xrays and radio waves

18
Q

What is thermal energy?

A

Energy that comes from heat…examples are cooking on a stove

19
Q

What is sound energy

A

Sound energy is produced when an object is made to vibrate. Sound energy travels in all directions. Sound need to travel through a medium like air or water. Examples would be guitar etc

20
Q

What is chemical energy

A

Stored energy. Once chemical energy is released from a substance that substance is transformed into an entirely different substance. Examples are batteries, coal etc

21
Q

What is an energy transformation

A

The change of energy from one form to another

22
Q

Can energy be created

A

No, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but it can change from one form to another

23
Q

Give examples of energy transformations

A

A toaster transforms electrical energy into thermal energy

A blender converts electrical energy into mechanical energy

24
Q

What is input energy

A

An appliance needs energy to go into to it to make it work …this is called input energy. Examples…A TV needs electrical energy as an input

25
Q

What is output energy

A

The energy that an appliance creates for us to use…I.e. A toaster out put energy is thermal energy
