Energy Flashcards
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work
What is the source of energy on earth
The sun
What type of energy does the sun provide
Heat energy
Light energy
What is the process whereby plants make food from the sun?
Photosynthesis
What is a food chain
A food chain is how energy moves through all living habitats and ecosystems
The chain begins with the sun and ends with animals
What are the 2 groups of energy sources
Renewable and non renewable
What are renewable energy sources
Sources of energy that are unlimited or can be replaced
If it can be recreated in about 100 years
Examples wind, solar, water
Also called clean or green energy because it doesn’t pollute
What are non renewable sources of energy?
Can’t be replaced in a relatively short time. Most of our energy comes form fossil fuels (natural gas, crude oil)
Give examples of renewable energy
Wind
Wind farms …The wind spins the turbines to create electricity
Water
Can be used to generate electricity …this is called hydropower
Solar
Converts sunlight into electricity
Give examples of non renewable energy sources
Oil
Pumped out of the ground. Used in vehicles or for heating
Gas
Extracted from the ground…Used for cooking and heating or converted to electricity
Coal and uranium
Both are mined from the earth. Coal is burned to generate electricity
Uraniumis used to power nuclear generators
What are the 2 types of energy?
Kinetic and potential
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of motion…ie whenever you are moving
What is potential energy
Energy that is stored…example is a battery
What types of energy are there?
Mechanical Electrical Light Thermal Sound Chemical
What is mechanical energy
Moving energy…example is a car or bike
