Energy Flashcards
What is Kenetic energy
Kinetic energy is the energy stored in moving objects
Elastic potential energy
Energy stored in a stretched spring
What is Gravitational potential energy
The energy stored in object due to its position above the Earth surface
What is specific heat capacity of a substance
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of substance by 1 °C
What is thermal energy
The energy store due to an objects temp
What is work (work is done)
Work is done whenever energy is transferred from one store to another
What is power
Power is the rate at which energy is transferred or the rate at which work is done
What is thermal conductivity
The higher the thermal conductivity of the material, the higher the rate of energy transfer by conduction across that material
Name insulating materials
- double glaze windows
- external brick wall and internal freeze block wall
- cavity between walls filled with insulating materials
Name the three fossil fuels
Coal
Oil
Gas
Fossil fuel advantages
- Reliable, they always provide energy when we need it
- They release a great deal of energy
- abundant and relatively cheap
- Versatile
Fossil fuel disadvantages
- releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide
- Non-renewable
- pollution
- global warming
Name two sources of Nuclear Power
Uranium and plutonium
Is nuclear power renewable or nonrenewable
it is non-renewable
Nuclear power advantages
- no carbon dioxide
- it does not contribute to climate change
- extremely reliable
- generates a lot of electricity
