Energy Flashcards
What are the different forms of energy?
Kinetic (KE) (movement energy) Potential - GPE (lifting an object) - Strain/elastic (stretching) Chemical (stored in chemical bonds) Heat (thermal) Light Sound Electrical Nuclear (stored in nuclear bonds - released in atomic bombs/nuclear power stations)
Energy change concept
In any energy change, you always get some undesirable energy produced (wasted energy). This is usually in the form of heat, light and/or sound. This wasted energy usually dissipates into the atmosphere.
e.g. light bulb
electrical -> light + heat
What is the principle of the conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can be changed from one form into another.
How does one draw a sankey diagram?
The width of the arrow and height must be to scale to represent the value of the energy.
How does one calculate efficiency?
efficiency = (useful energy out/total energy in) x 100
How are the particles in ice arranged and what is their movement like?
- Regular pattern (close packed).
- Vibrating in fixed positions.
- Little space in between the particles.
How are the particles in water arranged and what is their movement like?
- Irregular pattern.
- Able to move over and past other particles.
- Little space in between the particles.
How are the particles in steam arranged and what is their movement like?
- No pattern.
- Able to move freely and fast.
- Large spaces between the particles.
