Energy Flashcards
What is the unit used to measure energy
Joule, the same unit used to measure work
What is energy
The ability to do work..it is the ability to make things move
Name different forms of energy
Kinetic energy…… Electrical energy…magnetic energy
Potential energy….solar energy…nuclear energy
Sound energy….Heat energy… Chemical energy
What is the difference between renewable and non renewable sources of energy
Non renewable sources of energy will run out..eg coal and oil
Renewable sources will not run out eg wind
List sources of renewable energy
Solar energy
Hydro electricity
Wind energy
Nuclear energy
List sources of non renewable energy
Oil
Coal
Gas
Turf
What are the advantages of non renewable sources of energy
Easy to get
Reasonably cheap
What are the disadvantages of non renewable energy
Causes greenhouse gas emissions
Pollutes the atmosphere, eg acid rain
The sun is regarded as the primary source of energy.
Give 3 reasons for this
- Without the sun we would not have fossil fuels
- Plants need the sun for photosynthesis to produce fruit and vegetables
- Weather conditions are linked to the sun, sowing and tidal energy depend on the sun
What is our primary source of energy
The sun
List ways to reduce the amount of energy we use in everyday living
- Better insulation in our homes
- Install energy saving bulbs
- Walk or take a bus instead of driving
- Switch off electrical devices when not in use
- Turn off lights when leaving a room
Explain kinetic energy and give examples
Moving objects have kinetic energy
- A moving car with passengers inside has kinetic energy
- Waves crashing on the beach move surfers along.
Explain potential energy and give examples
Potential energy is energy that is stored but when you change it’s shape or position it gains energy
- Winding a clock changes the spring
- Branches on a tree… They can fall to the ground
- The food we eat, when digested gives us energy
