Energy Flashcards
Energy Transformation?
A change from one form of energy to author is called______________or an energy conversion.
What is fuel ?
Is a substance that provides energy -such as heat, light, motion,or electricity. As a result of a chemical change .
What is combustion ?
Fuels contain stored chemical energy which can be released by ________or burning .
What are fossil fuels ?
Is energy rich substance formed from the remains organisms.
Hydrocarbons?
Are chemical compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen atoms
What is Petroleum?
Is anther name for oil ,liquid ,fossil fuels .
Refinery?
Crude oil is heated and separated into fuels and other products
What are Petrochemical?
Compounds that are made from oil .(plastics, paints, medicine, and cosmetics)
What are 3 main fossil fuels ?
Coal,Oil,and Natural Gas
What is Hydroelectric Power ?
Electricity produced by flowing water (Dam Bridge)
What is Biomass fuels ?
A group of fuels which are made from living things
What is Gasohol ?
Adding the alcohol to gasoline can be used as fuel for cars .
Geothermal energy ?
Intense heat from earths interior that warms the magma
What are five renewable energy sources ?
Geothermal,biomass fuels, water, wind,and hydrogen .
Energy resources come in 2 forms
Non-renewable
Renewable
What is Non- renewable
Gone once they are used up (take thousands of years to re- form )
Define Fossil fuels
Provide most of the energy we use today (formed from remains of organisms )
What are 3 types of Fossil Fuels ?
Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas
What’s coal ?
- The are formed from plant remains
- Must be mined from the ground
What’s Oil?
- liquid Fossil
- Formed from small animals ,algae, and other organisms that lived in the SEA millions years ago
What’s Natural Gas ?
- mixture of methane + other gases
- Forms from some of the fm same organisms as oil
Define Renewable
- constantly being supplied
- scientist are working to find ways to use these resources to meet our energy needs
The types of Renewable resources (6)
Solar Energy Hydroelectric Power Wind power Biomass Fuels Geothermal Energy Hydrogen Power
Hydroelectric power
- power produced by flowing water
- a dream built across a river blocks
- the flow of water and creates a reservoir
