Energy Flashcards
What are the energy transfers?
- Mechanically
- Electrically
- By heating
- By radiation
What are the energy stores?
- Kinetic
- GPE
- Nuclear
- Elastic Potential
- Chemical
- Thermal
- Magnetic
- Electrostatic
What are the types of non-renewable resources + their uses?
- Fossil fuels (coal ,oil ,natural gases)
= Used to transport heating and electricity generation. - Nuclear fuels
= Used for electricity generation.
What are the renewable resources and their uses?
- Biofuel
= transport heating, electricity generation. - Wind
= electricity generation. - Hydroelectricity
= electricity generation. - Geothermal
= electricity generation, heating. - Sun
= electricity generation. - Tides
= electricity generation. - Water waves
= electricity generation.
What is the link between GPE and Kinetic energy?
The ‘potential’ will be converted to kinetic energy if the object reduced its height as its pulled by gravity.
What is conservation of energy?
Energy can be transferred usefully, stored or dissipated, but it can’t be created or destroyed.
How does wasted energy occur + how can it be reduced?
- Friction between moving parts, electrical resistance and unwanted sound energy.
- Mechanical devices can be made more efficient by lubrication.
- For systems that are designed to transfer thermal energy the efficiency can be reduced by insulation.
What can be used to show how a surface effects thermal energy?
- Leslie’s cube
= Shows how the surface can effect the rate at which thermal energy is absorbed or emitted. - It has 4 sides
= dull black, shiny black, shiny white and dull white.
To conduct the practical you need:
Leslie’s cube, thermometers, stopwatch, ruler, clamp, boss and retort stand.
1. Fill the cube with hot water. = radiating thermal energy.
1. Fill the cube with the same volume but with cold water. = absorbing thermal energy.
