Energy Flashcards
Energy cannot be created or destroyed…
It can be transformed
Some forms of energy?
Kinetic (due to motion)
Potential (gravity or springs)
Thermal (Heat)
Equation for kinetic energy
KE = (1/2)mv^2
Potential gravitational energy
Ug = mgh
Potential energy due to spring
Us = (1/2)kx^x
What is power equal to?
It’s Energy divided by Time
Define power in terms of work
Power is the rate at which work was done. In other words:
P = dW/dt
Work is equal to the integral of power with respect to time.
What happens to energy when a force acts on an object?
This is transferred
What does conservation of energy states?
That initial energy must equal the final one in an isolated system.
This means that, when the total energy in the system remains constant, then energy is conserved.
In which type of collision energy is not conserved and why?
In inelastic collision, energy is not conserved because in this type of collision kinetic energy is transferred into some other type, such as sound, heat, etc.
Objects deform in elastic collisions
What does Hookes law say?
Force = Kx
Where, x is how much a spring has stretched and K is a constant.
