Energy Flashcards
What is kinetic energy?
Energy stored in a moving object.
What is elastic potential energy?
Energy stored in a spring.
What is gravitational potential energy?
Energy stored in an object due to it’s position above the earth’s surface.
What is specific heat capacity?
The energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1c
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy may be transferred, dissipated or stored, but not creates or destroyed
What is a system?
An object or group of objects
In a closed system, ______.
No energy can enter or leave.
What is work done?
Energy transferred between stores
What does mechanical work involve?
Using a force to move an object.
What does electrical work involve?
A current transferring energy
The higher the thermal conductivity, ___________.
the higher to rate of thermal energy transfer by conduction.
How do you determine the specific heat capacity of vegatable oil?
Place a beaker on a scale
Set scale to 0
Pour oil into beaker.
Record mass of vegatable oil.
Place thermometer and immersion heater in oil.
Wrap beaker in insulating material
Connect power supply and joulemeter to the immersion heater - leave for 30m.
Read total joules and temp
Calculate specific heat capacity
How to carry out the thermal insulators practical?
Place a small beaker inside of a large beaker
Boil water in kettle
Transfer 80cm^3 of boiling water from kettle into small beaker
Use a piece of cardboard with a thermometer hole as a lid for the large beaker.
Place thermometer in hole
Recording starting temp and start stopwatch
Record temp every 3 minutes until 15m
Repeat, addding different insulating materials every time.
Advantages / disadvantages of fossil fules
Very reliable
Energy dense
Abundant, relatively cheap
Produce co2
non - renewable
Advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power.
Very reliable
High power output
Produce radioactive waste
Expensive decommissioning
Contain radioactive materials
Adavantages and disadvana
