Energy Flashcards
What is work?
-force applied through a distance
-when energy is converted from one form to another
What is energy?
-the ability to do work
Examples of energy
-mechanical, chemical, nuclear, solar, sound, -gravitational
What conditions must be met in order for work to have been done by a force?
-a force must be applied and there must be displacement
What is GPE (gravitational potential energy)?
-energy stored due to the objects position above the earth
What is KE (kinetic energy) ?
-amount of work required to accelerate an object to a new velocity
What happens to the GPE of an object as it is lifted further away from earth?
-goes up
What happens to the KE of an object as its speed decreases?
-goes down
What is necessary for work to occur?
-work is done when a force acts on an objects and moves it by a distance
(Force + Distance)
What is mechanical energy made up of?
-both gravitational potential and kinetic energy
What is the equation used in a special case of lifting?
W=mgh
What is the formula for the law of conservation of energy?
gh = vf^2 - vi^2

What is power?
-power is the rate at which work is done OR energy is used (transformed)
What is efficiency?
How good a machine is at doing work, good at converting energy
