Energy Flashcards
What are the 8 energy stores?
Thermal, chemical, magnetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, kinetic, nuclear, electrostatic
When something falls, energy is transferred between which two of its energy stores?
GPE -> Kinetic
How do you know when an object gains kinetic energy?
It increases in speed/velocity.
(kinetic energy of particles also increases when heated)
How do you know when an object gains gravitational potential energy?
It increases in height.
How do you know when an object gains elastic potential energy?
The shape changes
In which ways can energy be transferred?
Heating, Electrical, Radiation, Mechanical
Explain conduction.
- When an object is heated, the particles in the part of the object being heated begin to vibrate more and collide with each other.
- These collisions energy to be transferred between the particles’ kinetic energy stores.
- This process continues throughout the object.
define conduction.
when vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles.
Define convection.
Where energetic particles move away from hotter to colder regions.
Explain convection
- when a liquid or gas is heated, the particles closest to the heat source gain energy and become less dense causing them to rise to the top of the gas/liquid
- Particles from these cooler areas will move to the hotter area (creating a convection current).
