Energy Flashcards
What is energy
Energy is a property that must be transferred to an object in order to perform work on or heat up the object it can not be created or destroyed only transferred and stored
What is energy measured in
Joules (j)
Name the 8 energy stores
- Kinetic
- GPE
- EPE
- Chemical
- Magnetic
- Internal
- Electrostatic
- Nuclear
What is GPE
Gravitational potential energy is the energy that an object has at a certain height
What is the GPE equation
Ep = mgh
Potential Energy = mass x Gravitational Field strength x height
What is EPE
Elastic potential energy is stored when a material is stretched or compressed
What is the equation for EPE
Ee = 1/2ke²
Elastic potential = 1/2 x spring constant x extension ²
What is kinetic energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of a moving object
What is the equation for kinetic energy
Ek = 1/2mv²
Kinetic energy = 1/2 x mass x velocity²
What is specific heat capacity
SHC is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg by 1°c
Higher SHC
Heats up slower
Cools down slower
More energy required
Lower SHC
Heats up faster
Cools down faster
Less energy required
What affects the temperature something reaches
How much energy is supplied
The mass of the object
The material the object is made from
What is the SHC equation
E = mcø
Energy = mass x SHC x temperature change
List the ways energy can be transferred
