Energy Flashcards
What is energy
Energy is the ability to do work.
It exists in various forms and can be transferred or transformed but not created or destroyed.
How is energy measured
Measured in joules (J) or kilojoules (kJ).
What types of energy
Kinetic
Potential
Thermal
Chemical
What is kinetic energy
Energy due to movement
What is potential energy
Is stored energy in a object like elastic
What is thermal energy
Energy due to movement of particles in a substance like friction, combustion or electricity
What is chemical energy
Energy stored in bonds of chemical compounds like food, batteries and petrol
What is radiant energy
Energy that travels in waves and can be seen as light, felt as heat, or detected as electromagnetic radiation like sun or light bulbs
What is nuclear energy
Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom.
What is sound energy
Form of energy produced by vibrations that travel through matter as waves like music, voices
Why do we need energy
Basic survival - warmth, cooking food, light
Transportation
Electricity for daily life - schools, hospitals
Industrial activities
Healthcare / medical
Agriculture / food production
What is heat conduction
Heat conduction is the transfer of thermal energy between particles of matter due to a difference in temperature like holding a metal spoon in hot soup makes the spoon hot.
What is energy conversion
Refers to the process of changing from one form of energy to another like solar panels converting to electrical energy (light to electrical)
Heat as a by product
Heat can be a by-product of energy transformation - like when machines overheat from use.`
What is an example of potential to kinetic energy
A roller coaster at the top of a hill possesses gravitational potential energy due to its height above the ground. As it descends, the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy as the coaster gains speed.
