Energy Flashcards
What do we consider when choosing fuel?
- efficiency
- cost
- transportation
- pollution
- renewable
How do you calculate energy density and specific energy?
energy density: energy/volume [J/m³]
specific energy: energy/mass [J/kg]
Explain how crude oil is turned into several fractions in a fractionating column

crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons with different chain lengths
1. heat the crude oil to turn the hydrocarbons into gas
2. hot gas rise up the fractionating column, which is hot at the bottom and cooler at the top
3. longer chains = higher BP = condense at lower temp = collected at the bottom; vice versa for shorter chains
Draw a diagram of fractional distillation, label the fractions in order and state their use
