Q

gravitational potential energy

A

the energy stored in an object based on its position above the earth’s surface. this is due to the force of gravity acting on an object

Q

energy transfers: pendulum

A
  • at the top the mass of the maximum store of Gravitational potential energy
  • as the pendulum swings the GPE is transferred to kinetic energy
  • at the bottom of the swing is the maximum mass of kinetic energy due to the bottom of swing being its max speed
17
Q

energy transfer: bungee jump

A
  1. GPE is the only energy in the system
  2. jumper falling = energy is transferred from GPE store to kinetic energy stored
  3. bungee rope begins to tighten = kinetic energy store is at its maximum
  4. bungee rope fully extended = kinetic energy is zero (the jumper is not moving)
5.all energy has been transferred to elastic potential store
  5. bungee rope then recoils and energy is transferred from elastic potential energy store to the kinetic energy store
  6. KE begins to transfer to GPE
  7. jumper never returns to the original position, because energy is dissipated as thermal energy due to friction.
