Energy Flashcards
What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable energy?
Renewable - energy can be reused
Nonrenewable - energy cannot be reused once it is used
What are the different types of fossil fuels?
Coal, petroleum, and natural gas
How do thermal power plants work?
Heat is created through burning a product or splitting atoms, heat boils H2O to make steam, steam turns the balde of huge turbines, blades spins generators to create electricity, transformer increases voltage to send electricity through distribution lines, and local transmitters reduce the Volta age for you to use.
Which sources are thermal?
What are the renewable energy sources used to generate electricity?
Solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, hydroelectric energy, and tidal harness energy.
What methods produce air pollution?
Fossil fuels and biomass
What are the advantages and limitations of fossil fuels?
Advantages: produces a lot of energy, height efficiency, comes from once living creatures, infrastructure exists, higher energy per mass than biomass, can be used anywhere
Disadvantages: large pollution, CO2 and greenhouse gases, large dependence, climate change, nonrenewable
What are the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy?
Advantages: highest energy to mass, small product used, no CO2
Disadvantages: radioactive waste, harmful, large plants
What are the advantages and disadvantages of biomass?
Advantages: renewable, decreases landfill waste, we always create waste to burn
Disadvantages: CO2, pollution, low energy per lb
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Geothermal?
Advantages: little pollution, renewable, no CO2
Disadvantages: low efficiency, large plants, bad smell
What are the advantages and disadvantages of hydroelectric energy?
Advantages: very efficient, no pollution, increases local H2O supply
Disadvantages: deaths of animals, flooding, lowers quality of H2O
What are the advantages and disadvantages of tidal harness?
Advantages: high efficiency, no pollution, lots of ocean
Disadvantages: affects birds, increases turbidity of water, equipment is noisy, breaks easily
What are the advantages and disadvantages of solar (not heating)?
Advantages: renewable, can supply a full community, no turbines or generators
Disadvantages: low efficiency, pollution in creation of product, needs storage facilities, needs sun
What are the advantages and disadvantages of solar (heating panels)?
Advantages: efficient, renewable, powers home heaters
Disadvantages: pollution in creation in product, needs storage facilities, needs sun
What are the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy?
Advantages: no pollution, renewable, work well in windy places
Disadvantages: damages wildlife, noisy, large storage facilities
