Energy Flashcards
What is chemical energy?
Potential energy stored in chemical bonds of molecules
What is elastic potential energy?
The potential energy associated with objects that can be stretched or compressed
What is electromagnetic energy?
A form of energy that travels through space as waves
What is gravitational potential energy?
Potential energy that depends upon an objects height
What is kinetic energy?
The energy an object has due to its motion
What is nuclear energy?
The potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
What is thermal energy?
The total kinetic and potential energy of all the particles in a substance
What is mechanical energy?
Kinetic or potential energy associated with the motion or position of an object
Define specific heat capacity
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1 degrees
What is the definition of power?
The rate of which energy is transferred (or rate at which work is done)
Two motors lift the same mass through the same height. Motor A does this in half the time of motor B. Which dissipates the most power?
Motor A
The energy transferred is the same but the time taken is less
Describe the energy changes involved when a ball is thrown upwards and then returns to its starting position
Upwards: KE is converted into GPE
Peak: maximum GPE, zero KE
Downwards: GPE is converted into KE
Describe the energy transfers for a bungee jumper
As the cord tightens, KE is converted and stores as elastic potential energy
At lowest point, the jumpers initial GPE equals the EPE stored in the cord
Explain why a bungee jumper slows down once the cord begins to stretch
Kinetic energy decreases since it is converted to elastic potential energy
Since KE is proportional to (velocity)2 , as KE decreases, so does velocity
Give examples of chemical energy stores

Batteries
State the law of energy conservation
Energy cannot be created or destroyed (it can only be transferred into different forms)
