Energy Flashcards
Energy change in chemical reactions
When a bond breaks, it absorbs
energy form the surroundings.
When a bond forms, it releases
energy to the surrounding.
Types of energy reactions
Endothermic and Exothermic
What is an Endothermic reaction?
A chemical reaction that absorbs energy
What is an Exothermic reaction?
A chemical reaction that releases energy
What is fuel?
Fuel is a substance used to produce heat or power by the chemical process of combustion
Classifications of fuels
Based on Physical state and based on Occurance
Based on physical state
Solid fuel
Liquid fuel
gaseous fuel
Based on Occurrence
Primary or Natural fuels
Secondary and prepared fuels
Characteristics of a good fuel
1-A high calorific value
2- Moisture content should be low
3- Should not produce harmful products such as Co2, H2s, and So2
4- Low content of non-combustible matter
5- Controllable
6- Economically easy and available
7- No offensive odour
What is coal composed of?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen
What is coal classified by:
Rank / Carbon contents and Maturation
What is Petroleum composed of?
Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Sulfur
Classification of Petroleum
Paraffinic base: It contains saturated hydrocarbons and little amount of naphthalenes and aromatics.
Asphaltic base: It contains mainly cycloparaffins or naphthalene
Mixed base: It contains paraffinic and asphaltic hydrocarbons.
