Energy Flashcards
What are the 7 stores of energy?
Kinetic Energy
Thermal Energy
Elastic Potential Energy
Gravitational Potential Energy
Chemical Energy
Magnetic Energy
Electrostatic Energy
What are the 4 transfers of energy?
Mechanical Working
Electrical Working
Heating by particles
Heating by radiation
What is kinetic energy?
All moving things store kinetic energy eg. A rollercoaster
What is thermal energy?
The energy a substance or object stores because of it’s temperature eg. Hot drinks, fire
What is elastic potential energy?
The energy stored in a springy object when you stretch or squash it eg. A hairband
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy stored in an object because of it’s position above the ground eg. A swimming diver
What is chemical energy?
Energy stored in a fuel eg. A battery
What is magnetic energy?
Magnetic fields
What is electrostatic energy?
Static energy
What does mechanical working involve?
A force, sound waves, surfaces being in contact
What does electrical working involve?
Via a current (through wires)
What does heating by particles involve?
Heat moving from one place to another via conduction and convection
What does heating by radiation involve?
Heat radiation, electromagnetic waves (light waves)
What is the Principle of Conservation of Energy?
Energy can not be created or destroyed, only transferred from one store to another
What are the energy stores and transfers in a kettle boiling?
Electrical working
Thermal energy store of the heating element
Heating by particles
Thermal energy store of the water
