Energy Flashcards
What is energy?
Energy is the ability of a system to do work.
What are the 2 main types of energy?
Renewable and non-renewable energy.
What are the three most common fossil fuels?
Oil,coal,natural gas
What are fossil fuels?
Fuels that were made from living matter(plants and animals) a very long time ago
What is global warming?
Gradual increase in Earths average temperature because gases such as carbon dioxide ,released when fossil fuels are burnt, trap radiation within the atmosphere.
What is renewable energy?
Energy that can’t run out-everlasting and can be replaced
Definition of non-renewable energy.
Energy sources that can’t be replaced and will eventually run out.
What is kinetic energy?
Energy that an object has when it is moving
What is an energy system?
An energy system consists of different parts that work together to store, use or give out energy so that a specific task can be done
What is potential energy?
Energy that is stored in an object or system
What does the law of conservation energy state?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can only be transferred from one system to another or converted from one form to another
What is chemical potential energy?
Energy stored in the particles of substances such as food and fuel.
What is chemical energy?
The energy which is stored in the bonds of chemical compounds.
Explain energy transfer in a doorbell.
When you press the button, electrical energy is transferred to the bell and the bell makes a noise.(electrical energy is transferred into sound energy.)
Why is global warming a problem?
I’ve caps melt and the animals that inhabit them die. Sea levels rise, flooding coastal cities. Many more natural disasters occur.
