Energy Flashcards
Define FORCE
Force is a “push” or a “pull”.
Define WORK
Work is done when a force moves a mass over a distance or energy is used.
Define ENERGY
Energy is the ability to do work
What is the unit of energy?
a Joule
Define a “Joule”
A Joule of energy is the energy used to lift 100g one meter.
Define “kilojoule”
1000 Joules
Define “megajoule”
1,000,000 Joules
Define “Kinetic Energy KE”
KE is the energy of movement
Define “Potential Energy PE”
PE is stored energy
Name 6 forms of energy
kinetic, potential, sound, heat, light and electrical energy
Name 4 forms of Potential energy
Gravitational, elastic, chemical and nuclear energy
Define “ Gravitational Potential Energy (PE)”
Gravitational PE is the energy stored in an oject that is lifted or high.
What is elastic PE?
Elastic PE is the energy stored in contracted springs, stretched rubber and other elastic materials.
What is chemical energy?
The energy stored in Chemicals (eg petrol).
What is nuclear energy?
The energy stored within atoms.
What is sound?
Sound results from vibrating objects causing wave disturbance in air or other materials.
What is heat?
The energy objects have by the vibration of the molecule and atoms within an object.
What is light?
Light is the energy is released by the atoms of hot or burning objects (eg stars).
What is electricity?
Electricity flows through conductors (eg: copper wire) when electrons move from areas of higher energy to areas of lower energy. Electrical energy can be easily converted to other forms of energy.
Define “Energy Transfer”
Energy transfer happens when one object transfers its energy to another object (eg; bat to ball)
Define “Energy Transformation”
Energy transformation happens when one form of eneregy is converted into another (eg: candle -> heat, light)
What three factors that determine the amount of Gravitational Potential Energy an object has?
Its mass, the force of gravity and it’s height above the ground
What two factors determine the amount of Kinetic Energy an object has?
Its mass and velocity
What is the energy conversion equation for the Albany wind farm?
kinetic energy -> electrical energy
