energy Flashcards
what are the 8 energy stores:
1) kinetic energy
2) gravitational
3) elastic
4) electrostatic
5) magnetic
6) chemical
7) nuclear
8) thermal
what is kinetic energy?
the energy of a moving object.
what is gravitational energy?
the energy something gains when you lift it, and the energy it loses when it falls.
what is elastic energy?
the energy of a stretched spring or elastic band.
what is electrostatic energy
the energy due to the force of attraction or repulsion of two charges.
what is magnetic energy?
the energy due to the force of attraction or repulsion of two magnets.
what is chemical energy?
the energy contained in a chemical substance.
what is nuclear energy?
the energy contained within the nucleus of an atom.
what is thermal energy?
the energy something has due to its temperature (or its state).
what are the four ways energy can be transferred between the eight energy stores?
1) mechanically
2) electrically
3) heating
4) radiation
mechanically:
an object moving due to a force acting on it.
electrically:
a charge moving through a potential difference.
heating:
energy transferred from a hotter object to a cooler object.
radiation:
energy transferred, eg. by light/sound waves.
what does the law of conservation say?
energy can never be created or destroyed. (but it can be stored, transferred and dissipated)
