Energetics Flashcards
Hess’ law
Hess s law states that the heat change in a
reaction depends only on the nature of the reactants and products,
no matter what reaction route is followed
enthalpy
The energy within a
system is referred to as the enthalpy and is denoted by the symbol
H.
the enthalpy change
energy change in a reaction is called (triangle) H.
chemical reactions
Chemical reactions involve bond breaking followed by bond making.
bond making
bond making is
exothermic.
bond breaking
Bond breaking is endothermic
activation energy
the minimum
amount of energy needed to initiate the chemical reaction that is the minimum
amount of energy required to break the bonds of reactant molecules before new bonds are formed to make the product.
