Endotherms and Ectotherms Flashcards
Ectotherm
An animal whose body temperature varies with the temperature of its surroundings.
Cold blooded animals
Invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians and most fish.
The majority of animals are ectotherms.
Reptiles have no form of internal body heat regulation.
Must lay in the sun all day.
Store heat from the day to warm them through the night.
Endotherm
An organism that generates heat to maintain its body temperature, typically above the temperature of its surroundings.
Use physiological processes to maintain their temperature- panting, shivering, sweating.
Those processes need energy in order to function.
Use metabolic energy waste products efficiently and constantly.
Warm blooded animals
Advantages and Disadvantages of Endotherms
ADVANTAGES-
Do not have to rely on the external temperature to keep a constant temperature.
Can perform normal activities at all times due to their constant temperature.
Ability to span different environments.
DISADVANTAGES-
High energy use of the body to maintain heat.
Need to acquire resources often due to high metabolic rates.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Ectotherms
ADVANTAGES-
Decreased maintenance needed by the body.
Need for resources very low due to low metabolic rates.
Example, Lizards could go 2 weeks without a meal.
DISADVANTAGES-
Cannot perform normal activities until appropriate body temperature is reached.
Limited living conditions due to external heat requirements.
Thermoregulation
The maintenance of internal temperature within a tolerable range.
