Causes of Pulpitis
A
- commonly caused by exposure of the pulp : allows bacteria from mouth into pulp chamber and infects pulp
- caries, accidental exposure during crown prep, fractured crown

Can Pulpitis occur to an unexposed pulp?
A
Yes - irritation from unlined filling, excessive heat during cavity prep and impact injuries are all other causes

Things to consider when deciding XLA or RCT?
A
- medical history
- usefulness of tooth in occlusion
- feasibility of treatment
- pt preference eg. cost

What puts some patients at higher risk of infection for RCT ?
A
- pacemaker / heart defects
- rheumatic fever
- valvular heart disease

Q
Purpose of Vitality Test
A
If tooth is alive or dead - this will determine the treatment and the state of the tooth
- alive : filling
- dead : endo or XLA

4 Vitality Tests
A
- Cold : cotton wool + ethyl chloride held on tooth’s crown
- Heat : GP point heated in flame and applied to crown
- Electricity : electronic pulp tester on crown
- X-ray : Alveolar abscess on dead tooth will show on periodontal ligament

Symptoms of Irreversible Pulpitis
A
throbbing tooth, hypersensitive to vitality test but not TTP, spontaneous pain
