Endodontic materials Flashcards
What is the composition of cavit?
Zinc oxide Calcium sulfate Zinc sulfate Talc Barium sulfate
What does cavit look like on radiograph?
Radiopaque
What are the advantages and disadvantages of cavit?
Pros:
Sets with presence of moisture
Expansion with water sorption to produce sealing effect
Cons:
Not strong (which is why its placed on the inside)
Not good for shallow restorations (<3mm thick)
What is the composition of IRM?
Zinc oxide
Eugenol
What are the advantages and disadvantages of IRM?
Adv:
Good sealing ability
Antimicrobial
Sedative effect on pulp
Disadv:
No adherence to tooth
High moisture sensitivity.
What is IRM used for?
Base/temp materials
Impression materials
Bite reg
Endo sealer
What are the properties of IRM?
Moderate strength
Requires some moisture for setting
Neutral properties
What are the properties of calasept and pulpdent?
Low thermal conductivity
pH 11 - 12
Bactericidal
Highly soluble
Sets in 1.5 - 2.5 minutes
What is calasept/pulpdent used for?
Cavity liner
Pulp capping
Used in deep areas of cavity prep
Apexification
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using calasept/pulpdent?
Adv:
Induces formation of tertiary dentine
Antibacterial (detoxifies bacterial endotoxin LPS)
Easily manipulated
Disadv:
Moisture sensitive
Low strength
Opaque
Cant be applied in a thick layer
Toxic in high concentrations (may cause inc risk ankylosis and replacement resorption)
What are the properties of ledermix paste?
Anti-inflammatory
Anti-bacterial
Releases for up to 6 weeks

CS: Triamcinolone
AB: Demeclocycline
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using ledermix paste?
Adv:
Antibacterial
Inhibition of clastic cells
Inhibition of PMN neutrophil collagenase
Disadv:
Can discolour the tooth if used incorrectly
What are the properties of ledermix cement?
Hard setting
Anti inflam and antibacterial
What are the components of ledermix cement?

Sets in wet environment
Sets in 3 - 4 hours
What is MTA used for?
Endodontic sealer
Apexification
Repair of root perforations
Direct pulp cap
Pulpotomy
What are the adv and disadv of MTA?
Adv:
Biocompatible
Antimicrobial
Sealing properties

Difficult manipulation
Long setting time
What are the components of EDTAC?
Ethylene Diamine tetra Acetic acid
Cetrimide
What are the properties of EDTAC?
It come in gel, liquid, and paste forms
It is a chelating agent
What is the function of EDTAC?
Removal of inorganic debris
Used in initial instrumentation of canal
What are the advantages of using EDTAC?
Adv:
Can facilitate instrumentation of canal.
Flushes debris
What is NaOCl used for?
Removes organic debris
Used for canal prep
What are the adv and disadv of using NaOCl?
Adv:
Disinfects canals
Flushes debris
Disadv:
Toxic/tissue irritant
Has to be used with rubber dam
How long does AH-26 need to set?
9 - 15 hours. Working time is 4 - 6 hours
What is AH-26 used for?
Canal sealer
What does AH-26 look like on radiograph?
Radiopaque
