Endocrine System Review Flashcards
what do the follicular cells secrete?
T3 and T4
what hormone does the anterior pituitary release?
growth hormone, prolactin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), follicle-stimulating (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH).
what is the target organ and the function of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)?
the target organ is the adrenal cortex and the function is to respond to stress and trigger adrenal glands to release aldosterone, cortisol, and sex hormones.
what is the target organ and the function of the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)?
the target organ(s) are the ovarian follicles and the seminiferous tubules and the function is oogenesis, estrogen production, and spermatogenesis.
what is the target organ and the function of the luteinizing hormone (LH)?
the target organ is the ovarian follicles and the function is ovulation, secretion of progesterone, and formation of corpus luteum.
what hormones does the posterior pituitary gland release?
pitocin, oxytocin, and antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
what hormone does the adrenal medulla release? what is its target organ and function?
the adrenal medulla releases adrenalin (epinephrine and norepinephrine). The target organ is general. It’s function is responsible for our fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system)
what is the target organ and function of cortisol, and cortisone?
target organ is general and the function is responsible for stress response and it’s an anti-inflammatory
what is the target organ of the thymosin?
lymphoid tissue
what is Simmond’s disease?
hyposecretion of growth hormone (GH)
what is cretinism?
hyposecretion of T3 and T4
what is myxedema?
hyposecretion of T3 and T4
what is Graves’ disease?
hypersecretion of T3 and T4
what is Addison’s disease?
hyposecretion of adrenal cortex
what is Cushing’s disease?
hypersecretion of the adrenal cortex
