Two types of pituitary gland tumours.
A
- Non secretory tumours (less hormone released)
- secretory tumours (excess hormone secretion). Hyper-secretion due to; head injury, surgery, radiation, and antoantibodies.
Pituitary adenoma is a benign tumour. Prolactin oma is a common type of benign pituitary tumour.

Anterior pituitary gland diseases.
A
Relates to growth hormones.
Overreactive gland results in gigantism in children and acromegaly in adults.
Underactive gland results in dwarfism.

Describe gigantism in children.
A
- too much growth hormones
- overgrown long bones before epiphyses of bone is closed

Describe acromegaly in adults (cause and symptoms).
A
- too much growth hormones after
epiphysis is closed - potential causes; pituitary tumour (95%), ectopic growth hormone secreting tumour (5%)
- symptoms; overgrown and thickening of soft tissue’s causing coarsening of face features, swelling hands and feet (acromegaly), protruding jaw, and large internal organs

Describe dwarfism.
A
- less growth hormones in kids
- occurs after 2-3 years after birth
