endocrine system Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
Works with nervous system to control functions
Slower than NS but more powerful and widespread
What is a gland?
Produces hormones
What is a hormone?
Secreted into blood to affect cells with receptors for that hormone
What is thyroxine?
Produced by thyroid gland
Affects cells in heart increasing heart rate
Increases metabolic rate = affects growth rate
What is the major endocrine gland?
Pituitary gland
In brain
Master gland - controls release of hormones from other glands
How does the fight or flight response work?
Stressor perceived - hypothalamus triggers activity in sympathetic branch of ANS
Changes from parasympathetic state to sympathetic state
Stress hormone adrenaline released from adrenal medulla - creates arousal needed
Parasympathetic NS returns body to resting state
What is the rest and digest response?
Body in resting state
Parasympathetic is antagonistic to sympathetic
Reduces activities increased by sympathetic branch
What are the biological changes associated with the sympathetic state?
Increased heart and breathing rate Pupil dilation Inhibited digestion Inhibited saliva production Contracted rectum
