Endocrine System Flashcards
peptide hormone
Synthesized in the rough ER and modified in the Golgi. Hydrophilic and are made up of amino acids. Bind to receptors on the cell surface. Affect target cell via second messenger pathways.
steroid hormone
Synthesized from cholesterol in the smooth ER. Hydrophobic and bind to receptors in the cytoplasm or nucleus. Bind to DNA to alter transcription.
tropic hormone
Hormones that regulate other hormones.
hypothalmus
portion of the brain the controls the endocrine system by releasing tropic hormones that regulate other tropic hormones called releasing and inhibiting factors.
anterior pituitary
controlled by releasing and inhibiting factors of the hypothalamus.
posterior pituitary
composed of axons which descend from the hypothalamus.
thyroid hormone
produced from the amino acid tyrosine. Works to increase metabolic rate and body temperature and to stimulate growth in children.
growth hormone
anterior pituitary; (peptide)
Increase bone and muscle growth
Increase cell turnover rate
