Endocrine System Flashcards
Define hormone and state how they function and are carried.
Hormones, or chemical signals that coordinate body functions, are carried by the circulatory system to communicate messages within the body.
Name each endocrine gland as discussed and state the hormone produced by each, also stating its function.
The pineal gland secretes melatonin, which promotes reproductive activity based on environmental light conditions.
The thyroid gland secretes various hormones that stimulate T cell development.
Identify the action of steroid hormones.
Steroid hormones diffuse via the phospholipid membranes of cells.
Identify the action of peptide hormones.
Peptide hormones regulate blood calcium levels.
Describe how a negative feedback mechanism controls things.
A negative feedback mechanism determines the relative amounts of insulin and glucagon secreted by islet cells.
Explain the process (including the names of the hormones involved and their source) of blood glucose control in humans.
Pancreatic hormones, insulin and glucagon in particular, regulate the concentration of glucose (sugar) in the blood, countering each other in a feedback circuit that manages circulating glucose levels.
