Q

What is a hormone?

A

Is a chemical messenger which, having been formed in one organ or gland, is carried in the blood to another organ, where it influences activity, growth or nutrition.

16
Q

What does ADH do?

A

Increases water reabsorption at the kidney

17
Q

What does ANP do?

A

Increases NA loss at the kidneys

18
Q

What are the hormones produced in the anterior lobe?

A
Growth hormone (GH)
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
Prolactin
Gonadrotrophic hormones -- (FSH) (LH)
19
Q

What does GH do?

A

Promotes growth of the skeletal, muscles, connective tissue and organs such as kidneys.

20
Q

What does TSH do?

A

It stimulates growth and activity of the thyroid gland, which secretes the hormone thyroxine t4 and triiodothyronine t3
Regulated by negative feedback.
When blood level of thyroid hormones is high, secretion is reduced.

21
Q

What does ACTH do?

A

Stimulates the flow of blood to the adrenal cortex, increases the concentration of cholesterol and steroids within the gland and increase the output of steroid hormones especially cortisol.

22
Q

What does prolactin do?

A

Stimulates lactation (milk production) and has a direct effect on the breasts.

23
Q

What hormones are produced in the posterior lobe?

A

Oxytocin

Anti diuretic hormone

24
Q

What is the adrenal gland?

A

There are two.
Situated on the top of the kidney.
4cm long and 3 cm thick
Have two parts…. Outer part is the cortex. Inner part medulla

25
Q

What hormones does the adrenal cortex produce?

A

Glucocorticoids
Mineral orticoids
Androgens (sex hormones)

26
Q

What are the two main glucocorticoid?

A

Cortisol

Corticosterone

27
Q

How does the body deal with stress?

A

Immediate response - flight or fight meditated by the sympathetic part of nervous system
Long term response - ACTH from the anterior lobe of the puturity gland stimulates the release of glucocorticoids and mineral orticoids from the cortex, these increase or decrease the reps ones to stress

28
Q

What hormones are part of the adrenal medullar?

A

Noradrenaline

Adrenaline

29
Q

What are adrenaline and noradrenaline released in response to?

A

The systematic nervous system and sensors.

30
Q

What is the adrenal medulla?

A

Surrounded by cortex,

Closely allied to the sympathetic nervous system

31
Q

What is noradrenaline?

A

Ma intense of the blood pressure, by causing general vasoconstriction, except of the Conakry arteries

32
Q

What is the function of aldosterone?

A

Maintenance of the electrolyte balance in the body.

Stimulates reabsorption of sodium.
