Endocrine System Flashcards
Function of growth hormone
Stimulates growth and metabolism
Function of epinephrine
Increases heart rate, blood, sugar, and is responsible for fight or flight response
Function of calcitonin
Lowers blood calcium level
Function of melatonin
Involved in biological rhythms
Function of oxytocin
Stimulates contraction of uterus and mammary gland cells
Function of androgen
Promote Development of male sex characteristics
Function of thyroxin
Stimulates and maintains metabolic processes
Function of anti diuretic hormone
Promotes retention of water by kidneys
Function of insulin
Lowers blood glucose level
Function of glucagon
Raises blood glucose level
Function of the parathyroid
regulate calcium levels and have no effect on metabolism
Function of the thyroid
Make, store, and release thyroid hormones into your blood
Function of the adrenal gland
Regulate metabolism and help control blood pressure
Function of the pineal gland
Produces melatonin and maintains circadian rhythm
Function of the pancreas
Helps in digestion and regulates blood sugar
What is amplification
Strengthens stimulus energy when the hormone binds to receptor, then receptor binds to many proteins, which each continue down the metabolic pathway
Difference between negative and positive feedback?
Negative feedback brings it back to homeostasis, positive feedback strengthens
Why do hormones activate only to specific cells and not every cell?
Because they have special receptors that only work when that specific hormone attaches to it.
