Endocrine System Flashcards
Functions of endocrine system
Regulating mood; Growth and development; Tissue function; Metabolism; Sexual function; Reproductive process
Consists of nine major glands, each of which secretes different hormones in different processes in order to assist
Endocrine system
Chemical messengers that are secreted directly into blood through major endocrine glands
Hormones
Main link between endocrine and nervous system; hormones in this gland control feelings of thirst and hunger
Hypothalamus
Called as master gland; contributes to growth and development
Pituitary gland
Gland that releases melatonin
Pineal gland
Produces thyroxin and triiodothyronine
Thyroid
Gland that regulates level of calcium in blood (from hormone it produces)
Parathyroid
Secretes adrenalin, noradrenalin and corticosteroids
Adrenal gland
Produces sex hormones for the body
Gonads
Produces thymosin and protects body from pathogens
Thymus
Parts of adrenal gland
Adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla
Outer part of adrenal gland that produces corticosteroids
Adrenal cortex
Inner part of adrenal gland that produces catecholamines
Adrenal Medulla
Aka. Adrenaline which increases blood pressure and heart rate
Epinephrine
Gonads of females
Ovaries
Gonads of males which is outside pelvic cavity
Testes
Condition where body lacks sufficient amount of thyroid hormone
Hypothyroidism
Regulates blood sugar and secretes glucagon and insulin
Pancreas
