Endocrine System Flashcards
Exocrine glands…
- They have ducts
* They deliver their products directly to a specific site
Endocrine glands are..
Ductless
Use the blood stream
Secrete hormones
Important functions of hormones are….
- Regulate metabolic processes
- Help transport substances through membranes
- Help regulate water balance, electrolyte balance, and blood pressure
- Plays a role in reproduction, development and growth
Steroid hormones…
- Sex hormones
* Adrenal cortex hormones
• Non-steroid hormones
- Amines – formed from tyrosine amino acid
- Proteins – long chains of amino acids folded
- Peptides – short chains of amino acids
- Glycoproteins – proteins joined with carbohydrates
Pituitary gland..
- Lies at the base of the brain in the sella turcica
- Consists of two distinct portions:
- Anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis)
- Posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis)
Thyroid gland…
- It produces three hormones:
- T3 (thyroxine)
- T4 (triiodothyronine)
- Calcitonin
Parathyroid gland…
Secretes PTH which • Regulates calcium and phosphate ion concentrations in the blood
• Promotes calcium absorption in intestines through metabolism of vitamin D
• Elevated blood calcium ion concentration, parathyroid secretion is inhibited – low blood calcium ion level, parathyroid hormone is secreted
Adrenal glands…
Adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla and is closely related to the kidneys
Pancreas secretes what hormones?
- Alpha cells secrete glucagon
- Beta cells insulin
- Delta cells secrete somatostatin
