Q

Steroid and Non steroid hormones

A

Steroid hormones – lipid-soluble, derived from cholesterol

 Can pass easily through cell membranes
 Example: Cortisol

Nonsteroid hormones – derived from protein, amino acids, or peptides

 Need receptors and 2nd messengers to relay message into cell
 Example: Epinephrine

Q

Cortisol ( hydrocortisone)

A

Functions:

 Gluconeogenesis – reverses glycolysis; ensures fuel supply (i.e. for the brain) when fasting or during vigorous exercise

 Increases vasoconstriction initiated by epinephrine

 Anti-inflammatory agent

 Increased respiration
 Increased BP
 Blood to skeletal muscles
 Increased glycogenolysis
