Endocrine System Flashcards
Nervous system vs Endocrine System
Nervous system acts quickly – uses negative and positive feedback
Endocrine system acts slowly – uses negative feedback loop
Steroid and Non steroid hormones
Steroid hormones – lipid-soluble, derived from cholesterol
Can pass easily through cell membranes
Example: Cortisol
Nonsteroid hormones – derived from protein, amino acids, or peptides
Need receptors and 2nd messengers to relay message into cell
Example: Epinephrine
Cortisol ( hydrocortisone)
Functions:
Gluconeogenesis – reverses glycolysis; ensures fuel supply (i.e. for the brain) when fasting or during vigorous exercise
Increases vasoconstriction initiated by epinephrine
Anti-inflammatory agent
Epinephrine (adrenaline)
Increased plasma concentration from 60-70% of VO2 max
Functions:
Increased HR
Increased respiration
Increased BP
Blood to skeletal muscles
Increased glycogenolysis
