Endocrine System Flashcards
Describe the role of the endocrine system in responding to changes in the environment using an example
Role: Producing hormones, that regulate bodily functions
Example: In response to stress, the adrenal glands release adrenaline, which increases heart rate and energy levels.
What is the Endocrine System?
- A messenger system
- is part of the CNS
- controls hormones in the body
Describe how messages are transmitted throughout the body
Electrical Impulses that move along neurons and neurotransmitters carry these signals across synapse to other neurons or target organs
Define Hormone
Chemical messenger that is released form our glands. these can have a long or short term impact.
Define Gland
Organs that release and produce hormones.
Define Feedback
A mechanism by which a system self-regulates. for example like when insulin lowers blood sugar after eating.
Define Homeostasis + discuss examples of how both the nervous and endocrine systems maintain homeostasis.
Homeostasis: Maintaining a stable internal environment.
