Endocrine System Flashcards
1
Q
Endocrine system
A
- Network of glands throughout the body that makes/secretes hormones
- Hormones required to regulate bodily functions
- Works closely with NS but is slower - more widespread effects
2
Q
Hormones
A
- Travel through bloodstream from gland to target site
- Only affects target cells with right receptor for NT
- When enough receptors are stimulated by hormones, a physiological function takes place
- Influence many processes (eg. mood, stress)
3
Q
Pituitary Gland
A
- Master gland
- Controlled by hypothalamus
- Links nervous and endocrine systems
- Releases hormones for bodily functions such as ACTH and Oxytocin
4
Q
Adrenal Cortex
A
- Necessary to live, shuts off unnecessary functions when stressed
- Cortisol causes stored energy to be released in stress
5
Q
Testes
A
- Release testosterone
- Aggression, sex drive, muscle size/strength, bone density
5
Q
Adrenal Medulla
A
- Unnecessary to live
- Releases adrenaline and noradrenaline - increased motivation
6
Q
Ovaries
A
- Release oestrogen - reduce anxiety
- Release progesterone - increase anxiety, threat/social responsiveness
