Endocrine System Flashcards
What is a negative feedback loop?
This is a response that brings levels in the body back to normal (I.e if you’re too hot)
What is a positive feedback loop?
Causes levels to move further away from normal (oestrogen increasing during menstrual cycle)
What is the purpose of the endocrine system?
To maintain homeostasis (remain stable)
What does the endocrine system consist of?
A set of ductless glands that produce hormones
What are hormones made of?
Lipids (fat)
Amino Acids (protein)
What are the 2 different types of hormones?
Steroid
Peptide
What do catabolic hormones do?
Break things down
What do Anabolic hormones do?
Build things up
What is a steroid?
Usually ends in ‘one’ (testosterone)
Slow acting and long lasting - control themselves via feedback (will stop making if too much or produce if not enough)
What is a peptide?
Made of protein - fast acting and short lived (insulin)
What are chondrocytes?
Cartilage cells that control the growth of bones
What are trophic hormones?
Act as messengers and controllers of the other endocrine glands
