endocrine system Flashcards
purpose of endocrine system?
mainly for homeostasis and regulating the body’s chemical reactions
role of the pancreas?
regulates blood glucose
islet of Langerhans which have cells producing insulin and glucagon
alpha cells make…
glucagon
beta cells make…
insulin
blood glucose negative feedback mechanism?
blood glucose is high- insulin is secreted causing liver to convert blood glucose into glycogen (lowers blood glucose concentration)
blood glucose is low- glycogen is secreted causing the liver to hydrolyse its stored glycogen to glucose (increases blood glucose concentration)
7 parts of the kidney?
- cortex
- pelvis renal artery
- pyramid
- renal artery
- capsule
- medulla
- ureter
role of Bowman’s capsule?
ultrafiltration of the blood and produces glomerular filtrate in the production of urine
role of proximal convoluted tubule ?
adapted to selectively reabsorb useful materials such as glucose and amino acid to the peritubular capillaries
role of loops of Henle ?
concentrate salts in the tissue fluid of the medulla which causes an osmotic flow of water out of he collecting ducts
role of ADH secretion ?
negative feedback
what are detectors ?
osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus
what are coordinators ?
posterior lobe of pituitary secreting ADH
role of ADH ?
makes the plasma membranes of the distal convoluted tubule cells and collecting duct cells
more permeable to water
water is reabsorbed by osmosis from the filtrate into surrounding tissue fluid
