Endocrine System Flashcards
Hormones
Chemical messengers secreted from structures in the body which pass through the bloodstream to cause changes in our body or behaviour
Thyroid Gland
Hormone: THYROXINE
Regulates metabolic rate and protein synthesis
Does this by affecting cells in the heart that increases heart rate and affects cells throughout the body increasing metabolic rates
Testes
Hormone: Testosterone
Male sexual characteristics, muscle mass
Ovaries
Hormone: Oestrogen
Female sexual characteristics, menstruation, pregnancy
Pineal Gland
Hormone: Melatonin
Sleep-wake cycle
Pituitary Gland
The master gland and controls release of hormones
Endocrine System and ANS
They work in parallel in stressful situations
-When a stress is perceived, the hypothalamus triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the ANS.
-The ANS changes from its normal resting state PANS to SANS .
-The stress hormone, adrenaline, is released from adrenal medulla into the bloodstream
-Adrenaline triggers psychological changes in target organs and causes: Increased heart rate, dilation of pupils and decreased production of saliva
-Once the threat passes, PANS returns body to resting state, ‘rest and digest response;
